31st May – 24 June 2019 – IVYnode is joining forces with Terra Vivente organizing the 2nd Art Residency Program with the theme “Su Bixinau”, the neighbourhood, in Nurri, a small village in the center of Sardinia. Thanks to the precious collaboration with Fondazione Sciola, Municipality of Nurri, Proloco di Nurri and Archeogeo this 2nd Art Residency in Nurri will include an Exhibition in the Monastery of Santa Rosa, a Symposium during the Festival Sant’Arte in San Sperate, and a 2nd Exhibition curated by Fondazione Sciola.
About
The theme of the Art Residency is ‘Su Bixinau’, Sardinian for ‘the neighbourhood’. In the Sardinian culture the Bixinau has always been an important point of aggregation and socialization: women used to sit and talk to their neighbors, entertaining themselves in manual work such as sewing, knitting, etc. ; the streets pullulate of the voices of children playing, while the men held conversations among them. Not even 60 years ago every neighborhood was composed of more than 20 large families with even up to 10 children. The Bixinau, the street, was a strong meeting point in which people socialize. Today, where youth have left to study and work in urban centres, many houses are empty, but each day, the elderly sit on benches to visit and chat.
The character of the Residency is Transdisciplinary and it is open to artists, researchers, writers or everyone who wish to be integrated in an unique place where is still possible to appreciate authentic aspects.
The participants will live in private houses in the village of Nurri, in a calm environment rich in history and beautiful landscapes.
During the program the artists will have the possibility to work and exhibit in the Monastery of Santa Rosa in Nurri, dated XVII century, a perfect surrounding for side specific work and temporary installations. They will have the possility to keeping in touch with locals artisans, who still preserve an ancient knowledge of old techniques that are risking to disappear. Thanks to the professionalism of Archeogeo the participants can visit archaeological settle, exploring the territory and connecting with the nature which can also be inspiring for landart projects.
If your art practice embraces community interaction or collaboration in some way, temporary public art or site specific installation, sustainability or other models of art as social practice, this is the residency for you.
The artists participating in the Art Residency in Nurri will have a unique opportunity to be part of the Symposium “Su Bixinau” during the Festival Sant’Arte, guests for 3 days of the Fondazione Sciola, to exhibit their work first in the Monastery of Santa Rosa in Nurri and then in San Sperate during a 2nd exhibition cureted by Fondazione Sciola.
Symposium – Festival Sant’Arte – San Sperate
The participants are invited to the Symposium “Su Bixinau” in San Sperate. The Symposium will take part during the Festival Sant’Arte (now at the third edition, after the prelude in 2017 and the first edition in 2018). The Festival is focus on visual and performing arts and is organized by Fondazione Sciola , who promotes the work of Pinuccio Sciola and carries on the artist’s thought. The theme of the Symposium is “Su Bixinau”, the neighbourhood. Each participant is invited to present his own prospective starting each one from their own disciplinary path and personal experience, creating a moment of exchange and interaction with local inhabitants and local artists attending the Festival Sant’Arte.
During the 3 days Festival board and lodging are offered by Fondazione Sciola and the partecipants will be hosted in the Scuola degli Scalpellini where Pinuccio Sciola used to teach the techniques of sculpture. The artists will have the possibility to know and appreciate the work of Pinuccio Sciola by visiting the open air Museum Giardino Sonoro and by walking on the street of the village.
This year IVYnode has chosen Pinuccio Sciola as “Inspiring Artist” for the theme “Su Bixinau” since his work is intrinsically linked to the territory, his village and the streets of the San Sperate. Pinuccio Sciola (1942-2016) is one of the most famous artists in Italy and even exhibited in the Venice Biennale. He is known for his original and poetic sculptures which have a sound. He had been able to transform the limits and hostility of his land into an unprecedented resource. His artistic career started with a scholarship in 1959 that allowed him to attend the Cagliari Art School, the Art Institute of Florence and later the International Academy of Salzburg where he follows the courses of Minguzzi , Kokoschka, Vedova and Marcuse. Thanks to his work and interventions with mural painting, the village of San Sperate, where he has been born, is now a Museo a cielo aperto (Open Air Museum).

Exhibition in the Monastery of Santa Rosa in Nurri
The Municipality of Nurri will provide the use of the Monastery of Santa Rosa annexed to the Church, dating both back to the XVII century. The artists are invited to use the space and to get inspiration for creating the art project and the final exhibition. The Monastery complex dates back to the 17th century and presents a large number of rooms and outdoor spaces to accommodate anything from traditionally hung work to larger-scale installations.
Exhibition in San Sperate curated by Fondazione Sciola
The Fondazione Sciola, who work with the Open Air Pinuccio Sciola Museum is glad to organize a 2nd Exhibition in San Sperate.
They will make available to the participants of the Symposium a suitable venue for the works produced in Nurri and they will be glad to accept 2 or 3 artworks that can be part of the Foundation, as exchange of the hospitality during the Festival Sant’Arte.
Accommodation
During the residency the artists will live in private houses in the village of Nurri. Each house is independent and provide bathroom and a kitchen. The houses are located inside the village of Nurri and it would be easier to live in contact with the habitants and feeling the authenticity of the place getting the chance to know as well artisans who still preserve an ancient knowledge of old techniques that are risking to disappear.
Territory
The territory offers an extraordinary concentration of trace of the past and there are many settlements of great archaeological interest that have turned into a cultural point of reference. Nuraghi, Menirs, Domus de janas, Tombs of Giants built mostly between 3400 and 2700 BC, dated to the late Neolithic, Chalcolithic and early Bronze Age.
It is a suggestive place to explore. With the support of Archeogeo , specialized in the hystory of the territory, the participants could have the possibility to visit and be inspired by the archeological settle and paleontology investigation.
Sardinia is also well known for his wonderful landscape and sandy beaches. It is even possible to organize some excursions to the coast and visit some of the best places of the island.
How to apply
The program has a transdisciplinary approach. Emerging and established artists working in 2 and 3D media, performance, video, photography, sustainable materials, food, but also researchers and writers who have an interest in social practice, collaboration, cultural exchange program or research are invited to participate.

The selection of the artists is based on the curriculum, motivation letter and proposal.

Program fee
The program includes:
– 3 days in San Sperate during Sant’Arte Festival and accommodation in shared dormitory at Scuola degli Scalpellini, guests of the Fondazione Sciola.
– Symposium “Su Bixinau” during Sant’Arte Festival
– 3 weeks in Nurri, accommodation in private houses (shared or private rooms).
– Exhibition in the Monastery of Santa Rosa in Nurri
– Second exhibition in San Sperate end of June or July (to be decided yet)
– Transport from the airport to Nurri and return.
The organization does its best to support projects, providing guidance in acquiring materials, seeking information, making connections within the community.
IVYnode is a non-profit network and tries to keep the fee and expenses of the participants at the minimum.
The fee is 850€ and covers the cost of accommodation and the use of the studio. Artists must cover the cost of their own art supplies, food and transportation and to contribute to gas costs if we go somewhere by car. Cooking and cleaning are also the responsibilities of the artists.
At the moment we are not able to provide any funding but we will be happy to assist you by writing official letters of invitation or any appropriate documentation.
